Young Space Activities Overview in Portugal

The Space sector in Portugal has been mainly developed through the international cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA). Even though the industry panorama is considerably smaller than other ESA member states, the number of space related companies has increased to more than 15 in the last years. The PROESPAÇO association has had a major role in uniting the Portuguese Space industry, defending its interests when discussing with the public administration, the government and international organisations.

Portugal has also been active in supporting initiatives that inspire in pursuing a career in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields. As an example, Ciencia Viva has had a major role in organizing and sponsoring international events and competitions such as the European CanSat competition or the Conference for Space Teachers.

Finally, the ESA Business Incubator Center (BIC) that was established in the end of 2014, already invested in more than 10 companies under their incubation program, enabling entrepreneurs to receive comprehensive business and technical support to set up their business using space technology for non-space industrial and commercial uses.
