SGAC membership has been steadily growing throughout the years. Among our membership there are many incredible young space enthusiasts who should be recognised for their hard work and contributions to SGAC. In December 2009, the SGAC Executive Council decided to acknowledge one member per month for his or her outstanding work and contributions to SGAC and its goals.

We are proud to present the April 2010 Member of the Month: Sanjoy Som of Switzerland, founder and CEO of Blue Marble Space

editSMALL_sanjoy_AprilOriginally from Switzerland, Sanjoy is trained in aerospace engineering (B.Sc, M.Sc), and is currently a doctoral candidate in planetary sciences and astrobiology at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. He is the founder and CEO of Blue Marble Space, a non-profit organization who's first initiative is the 'One Flag in Space project', a direct spinoff from SGAC's Space Generation Congress. Sanjoy enjoys learning about ancient civilizations (and their knowledge of space), which have been the motivation behind most of his worldwide travels. He holds a private pilot license. Sanjoy has been continuously involved with SGAC, and in particular SGC, since the Fukuoka congress of 2005. He was assistant event manager for the 2007 and 2008 SGC's.

Angie Boyd (Australia/Italy) nominated Sanjoy for Member of the Month April:

"Sanjoy Som has been a long time member of the SGAC, actively supporting and driving initiatives, projects and congresses for many years. He is very much a behind the scenes, humble member with high impact on both an academic and interpersonal level. A consistent SGC delegate and IAC speaker since 2005, he was a founding member of the Moon Mars Workshop and project lead on this since 2006, SGC Assistant Manager and Fundraiser in 2007 and Project Lead in 2006-2009 as well as Webmaster for SGC 2009 and 2010. He holds a Bachelor and Masters in Aerospace Engineering and is now completing a doctoral degree at the University of Washington in Planetary Sciences and Astrobiology. His SGAC spin-off project of 2007, One Flag in Space, had a major impact and has become a non-profit organisation of which he is the CEO, Blue Marble Space, founded in 2009. ( Sanjoy is a Swiss national, currently residing in the United States who strongly believes in a manned mission to Mars due to the international cooperation such an endeavour will promote, in addition to being a potential path towards human unification."

And here is our MoM April reaction:

"The people I have interacted with at SGC have simply been incredible. The flow of ideas and enthusiasm of the participants regarding the benefits, but also the realities of space exploration is why I keep coming back. SGC has also allowed me to interact with brilliant minds, make lifelong friends, and explore ideas in a way that I could not have done elsewhere. To be recognized as member of the month is undeserved, humbling and an honor. Thank you for your nomination." (Sanjoy Som)
